Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these drugs should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
