The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
